Each week play activities are planned to encourage sensory learning. Week by week, throughout the ten week programme, focus activities will enable the children to build up a sensory rainbow box – perhaps a Christmas present for the family.
Rainbow Box Activities
Week 1 Rainbow – Create the box – decorating a shoe box with rainbow handprints.
Week 2/3 Red/Orange – Create ‘something to see’ – a picture; marbelling, finger painting, butterfly painting (can be used as a background for a photograph of the child).
Week 4/5 Yellow/Green – Create ‘something to hear’ – choose a ribbon for a jingle bell/listen to the sound it makes. Make a small shaker – instrument to tap, scrape, shake.
Week 6 Blue – Create ‘something to touch’ – a bookmark with ribbons and textured fabrics. Include activities involving tactile experiences: ‘feely boxes’ hand/finger painting etc.
Week 7 Indigo -Create ‘something to smell’ – lavender/pot pourri bags.
Week 8 Violet – Create ‘something to taste’ – Make Gingerbread men and decorate. or decorate cup cakes with coloured icing.
Week 9 Whole Rainbow – Make rainbow shaker sticks.
Week 10 Winter Wonderland – Christmas – Complete boxes.
